Mergers and acquisitions: the political dimension
Political decision making can have a big influence on mergers and acquisitions. The private sector is increasingly coming under scrutiny from politics. This is an issue often overlooked during investment decisions. The focus during those decisions tends to be on the value of the business being bought or sold, future market developments, ownership ratios and settlements. But what about the political dimensions? What are the political and administrative developments that might affect the sector you are about to invest in? What regulations and legislation will affect the growth of your business? Meines & Partners can work this out for you. We can help every party: the buyer, the seller and the target itself.
What do we do?
- We map out the short to medium term political/administrative risks that have a bearing on the investment decision making process. What plans do the government and other political parties have for the sector? We will speak to people behind the scenes to find out what the parties’ official positions are and what views are brewing there. We can identify the most important players in the process
(politicians, civil servants, opinion leaders, stakeholders) and monitor developments within political parties and departments.
We will come up with a political/administrative analysis outlining the history and current state of legislation and regulation in the Netherlands and Europe, and how you can influence it. We will then map out what you can expect in the next elections and what the threats and opportunities would be in various coalition governments.
- Throughout the process we will monitor political/administrative developments as they arise and advise you on how you can influence them. We will alert you to potential hindrances, what is being whispered in the corridors, and arrange conversations with those on the inside of politics. We can also draw on our political expertise to provide support during negotiations.
- After the merger/acquisition we will help set up and maintain a network in The Hague and Brussels. There can often be unforeseen loose ends to tie up in legal and political settlements, and we can support you in that.
